BPC-157 is not an approved medicine in any country. It holds no licence from the MHRA in the United Kingdom, the EMA in Europe, or the FDA in the United States. BPC-157 can be lawfully supplied in the UK for laboratory research, and possessing it is not a criminal offence. It cannot lawfully be sold or advertised for people to use.

The compound falls outside all three of the systems that normally govern substances sold in the UK. Medicines are licensed by the MHRA. Food supplements are regulated under food law. Controlled drugs are scheduled under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971. BPC-157 belongs to none of them.

The reason is the absence of clinical trials. BPC-157 was first isolated in the early 1990s and has been studied in animals since, but no company has taken it through human trials. Without trial data there is no licence application to assess, and no basis for deciding whether it should be classed as a controlled drug. Thirty years on, the compound has never entered the regulatory system.

The restrictions that do exist fall on suppliers rather than buyers. That distinction shapes everything else about the compound's legal position.

Is BPC-157 FDA approved?

BPC-157 is not FDA approved. It holds no approval from the FDA, the MHRA or the EMA, and it is not authorised as a medicine for any condition anywhere in the world.

Coverage during 2026 has suggested otherwise. Headlines describing the FDA as having cleared or approved BPC-157 refer to something narrower, and to a process that has not concluded.

What the July 2026 FDA vote changed

Three things happened in the United States during 2026, and they are frequently reported as one.

February 2026. The Department of Health and Human Services announced a review of peptides that had previously been restricted from use by compounding pharmacies, the US pharmacies that prepare medicines to order for individual patients, as part of a broader deregulatory programme.

April 2026. The FDA removed BPC-157, along with eleven other peptides including TB-500, KPV and MOTS-c, from Category 2 of its 503A bulk drug substances list. Category 2 covers substances with identified safety concerns. The peptides were removed because their original nominations were withdrawn, not because the safety concerns had been answered.1

July 2026. The FDA's Pharmacy Compounding Advisory Committee met on 23 and 24 July and voted 8 to 6, with one abstention, to recommend that BPC-157 be added to the 503A Bulk Drug Substances List, the list of raw ingredients those pharmacies are permitted to work with. TB-500 and KPV passed by the same margin, and MOTS-c by 7 to 5.2

What that vote does not mean

The committee voted against the written recommendation of the FDA's own scientific staff, who had reviewed all seven nominated peptides and concluded that none of them met the agency's evidence standard for inclusion. Reporting from the meeting noted that FDA reviewers found no human injectable trial data for BPC-157.2,3

The vote is advisory and not binding. Nothing has been added to any list. Before compounding pharmacies could legally prepare BPC-157, the FDA would need to accept the recommendation and then complete a formal rule-making process: a proposed rule, a public comment period, then a final rule. That process takes a year or more, and the agency is not obliged to begin it.3

The 503A list is also not a drug approval. It only says which raw ingredients those pharmacies may work with when preparing something for one patient with a prescription. A substance can be on the list and still not be an approved medicine.

Why it makes no difference in the UK

The 503A framework is part of the US Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. It has no application in the United Kingdom, where medicines are governed by the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.

No equivalent process is under way at the MHRA. No nomination, no review, and no change to BPC-157's UK status has been announced. A favourable US advisory vote does not create a route to lawful human use in Britain, and any UK seller presenting it that way is misrepresenting the position.

Is BPC-157 a prescription medicine?

BPC-157 is not a prescription-only medicine in the UK, because it is not a medicine at all in regulatory terms. A UK doctor cannot write an NHS or private prescription for it in the way they could for a licensed product.

A marketing authorisation is the licence a medicine must hold before it can be sold or advertised for treating a condition, and supplying an unauthorised medicinal product is a criminal offence. BPC-157 holds no such authorisation, and the evidence needed to apply for one does not exist. A search of PubMed, the main database of medical research, finds no BPC-157 study registered as a clinical trial. The only published human evidence is three small reports covering thirty people in total, all from one clinic, none with a control group.4,5,6 Our full guide to BPC-157 sets out that evidence base in detail.

The MHRA assesses a product partly on the overall impression it gives, so a site listing conditions, publishing quantities for people, or describing who might benefit is presenting a medicine whatever its disclaimer states.

Can BPC-157 be sold as a supplement?

BPC-157 cannot lawfully be sold as a food supplement in the UK, for two independent reasons.

Anything sold for a physiological effect on the body can be classified as a medicine regardless of what the label calls it. Relabelling would not change how the product is being presented.

BPC-157 also has no history of being eaten as food in the UK or EU before May 1997, which makes it a “novel food” under retained Regulation (EU) 2015/2283, a category that requires its own authorisation before anything in it can be sold as food. None has been granted for BPC-157, and none has been applied for.

Is BPC-157 a controlled drug?

BPC-157 is not a controlled drug. It appears in no schedule of the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971, carries no class, and possessing it is not a criminal offence.

Unlicensed and illegal are frequently treated as the same thing online. They are not. Anabolic steroids are Class C controlled drugs with specific offences attached to supply. BPC-157 has no controlled status at all, and the restrictions that apply to it concern how it is sold and advertised.

Where to buy BPC-157 in the UK

Buying research-grade BPC-157 from a UK supplier is lawful when it is supplied for research use. Because the compound sits outside the medicines framework, no regulator verifies what a vial contains, so purity and identity depend entirely on what a supplier chooses to test and disclose.

Four checks separate a serious listing from the rest.

A batch-specific certificate of analysis, published before purchase. The batch number should match the vial received. Certificates offered only on request, or dated well before the stock being sold, indicate testing is not routine. Our guide to reading certificates of analysis explains which figures matter.

Independent third-party testing. In-house results are better than none. An external laboratory has no commercial interest in the outcome.

Mass spectrometry alongside purity testing. HPLC, the standard purity test, measures what proportion of a sample is a single compound. Mass spectrometry, a separate test that works by weighing the molecules themselves, confirms that the compound is the peptide claimed. Purity figures alone establish only that a vial contains something consistently.

A UK address, contactable support and a returns process.

Importing from overseas carries a risk that domestic purchase does not. Border Force can detain and destroy unlicensed medicinal products, and packages containing research peptides are sometimes stopped. Seizures are inconsistent, so an overseas order may arrive without incident or may not arrive at all, with no recourse. An overseas seller shipping direct to UK consumers may also fall outside MHRA jurisdiction entirely, which weakens the buyer's position rather than improving it. Buying domestically keeps UK consumer protections in place.

Does BPC-157 show up on a drug test?

BPC-157 is detectable, and it is prohibited in sport.

The World Anti-Doping Agency prohibits BPC-157 at all times, in and out of competition, under the category covering substances not approved for human therapeutic use.

Anti-doping laboratories have developed and validated detection methods specifically for the compound. A 2023 study mapped what BPC-157 breaks down into inside the body, and showed it can be detected in urine at extremely low levels.7 A 2026 method paper included BPC-157 among 54 prohibited compounds detectable in dried blood spot samples.8

Standard workplace drug screening does not test for peptides, so BPC-157 would not appear on a routine employment panel. Sports anti-doping testing is a different matter entirely. Anyone competing in a tested sport should treat BPC-157 as prohibited and detectable, and confirm the current position with their governing body rather than with any commercial website. Is BPC-157 legal in other countries?

BPC-157 is unapproved as a medicine worldwide, but how it is treated varies.

In the United States it is not approved and not currently available through compounding pharmacies, pending the FDA process described above. In Australia, peptides of this type are generally treated as prescription-only medicines, and importing them is restricted. Across the EU, national regulators apply the same medicines framework as the UK, so the position is broadly equivalent, although enforcement differs between member states.

Anyone travelling with research peptides should check the destination country's rules rather than assuming UK status applies.

Specification and supply

BPC-157 supplied through this site is lyophilised powder, tested by HPLC, with a certificate of analysis issued for each batch. Vials are supplied by mass rather than as a prepared solution, so the resulting concentration depends on the volume of diluent added during reconstitution.
